health & lifestyle: juice cleanse

IMG_6492

Today marks the start of our 5 day pressed juice cleanse (please pray for us)

Here are the details as to why we are doing this.

Husband and I have been wanting to do a cleanse of some sort for a while now. After our 5 months of extensive traveling, we felt that our 'on-the-road-eat-out-take-out-lots-of-caffeine-and-diet-soda" diet had really left us in a rut. We're both active people, who have lived active lifestyles, but with so much moving around it was difficult to maintain a balanced diet and a regular exercise schedule. For the last month, we've been slowly worked our way back into our active lifestyles again, but have still felt the effects of our poor eating habits while on the road.

We are not doing this for weight loss, in hopes of curing anything, or because 'pressed juice' is the trendy thing with the celebs right now. We simply feel that our bodies are seriously lacking nutrients and are in need of a new, fresh, & healthy start.

So why  'pressed juice'?

This article on beautylish talks a little bit about the benefits of pressing your juice. Basically it all gets back down to the essence of why you drink organic, natural juice in the first place--the nutrients. With pressing your juice, you're minimizing the loss of essential vitamins, enzymes, proteins, and minerals. you can see more details here.

We're doing the cleanse through a company here in Houston called Squeezed, and we're doing their '5 Day Detox (Pressed Juice) Cleanse' . They actually deliver the juice before 6 a.m. every two days (because the juice is so fresh that it won't hold the full nutrients and quality for more than a couple days)

This morning we woke up to two coolers full of our personalized juices for the next three days (we'll get another delivery on Sunday)

My three main concerns are:

1) Caffeine & sugar--sadly, we're both pretty dependent on our daily dose (or two or three) of caffeine. They say that the first few days are going to be pretty tedious in that respect (I already miss my diet coke just thinking about it) It will be painful. And though we both like our sugary treats in different forms, we truly are both sweet-kind-of people. He eats some sort of "gummy" snack or candy on a daily basis, and I'm even worse--being that I have to have at least a piece of dark chocolate everyday (but let's just say--I rarely [if ever] turn down a chocolate chip cookie or fudge brownie)

2) Energy--they say that the first couple days your body has to get used to all the vitamins and nutrients and that you may feel pretty low energy that first day or two, but by day three you should feel fine (if anyone has any insight on this, please leave me a comment below!)--and it will be a renewed, healthy energy. I'm worried, because for the past month I've been back on a steady running schedule, and don't intend to stop for these five days. We'll see how it goes, and if it does get too difficult, I may shorten my runs, or mix it up with some other form of exercise (Again, if any of y'all have done a juice cleanse and have any exercise tips, please help a  girl out and let me know what your experience is!)

3) Hunger--this one is for both me and my husband (but mostly for my husband)--when ordering our 5-day juice supply, we were surprised to find out that the portions of juice don't vary for body type/size/weight. My husband and I will be drinking the very same amount of juice everyday. And let's just say, that this is not how we carry on during our everyday life. He's about twice my size/weight and he eats about twice as much as I do (if not more). He has a very fast metabolism and burns a lot of calories in a day. For me, I'm more worried about "feeling hungry"--not actually being hungry. Just that annoying little voice in your head telling you that you need to eat when you actually don't, but as for my husband, I'm worried that he will actually BE hungry for five days. The health pro at Squeezed assured us that he will be fine though--so we'll see!

Our juice cleanse will go through Tuesday of next week. Again please pray for us (we may just die) and if you have any tips or words of advice, I'd absolutely love to hear them. Also, I'm happy to answer any questions you may have. I'll be documenting our experiences each day. You can follow me on twitter, instagram, and find me on vine @ Kristen Campbell  (I'll most likely be using this every day for a quick Vlog updates that should be moderately entertaining--probably just shots of me crying in the corner drinking my detox juice)

All jokes aside, we are very excited and grateful that we have the opportunity to do this! It is going to be quite the adventure for us, because our health really is important to us--and we hope that this inspires and refreshes our bodies!

Okay, here goes nothing!

I wanted to give you advice since Austin and I did something similar last May! We were in a very similar eating out and eating for convenience phase while we were both in school and working and we felt just plain rough! We went about it differently and bought a juicer to juice ourselves. Let me just tell ya - be so happy you have that amazing company to get you those delicious pressed juices. We had no idea what to juice and our combinations were pretty off sometimes. We felt hunger pains for the first 2 days only because of the mentality eating means something solid. As long as we remembered we were getting all the calories and nutrients we needed everything was ok. Full disclosure - caffeine withdrawals were hell! I laid in bed dreaming of Dr. Pepper and my migraines were a constant reminder it was out of my life! Think about getting a migraine pill, we found natural ones, to get you through. Without these pills we would've been useless. By day 3 though all the cravings were gone. You're right about having less energy. We limited exercise to yoga and walks with our pup. Most important thing there is to listen to your body. At the end of the cleanse you will feel like you can run a marathon! Count on feeling great after so don't put too much pressure on yourself to run in the beginning. Oh and expect fevers, sweating and chills...those seem to accompany most cleanses! You'll be so happy you did it and be ridiculously proud of yourself. Good luck!

  4. Kristine! So good to hear from you, and thank you for the advice! You were so right about the headaches. Today is much better, but yesterday I honestly thought I was going to die ha ha.

Thanks so much for the tips! I'm glad you had a positive experience. So far, I'm not sure how I feel about it ha ha. Hope all is well!

    xoxo

  5. Ha ha thanks for the prayers. It's been a ROUGH day and a half so far. I too am a HUGE chocolate lover, but I'm realizing even more than the sweets--I just miss having energy. I've felt so out of it for the last day and a half. Supposedly that will change! We'll see! Thanks for the encouragement!

    xoxo!
